Newbold Farms

When looking for quality grass-fed beef I discovered Newbold Farms. I met this sweet, hardworking couple last year while they were helping out at Yellow Dog Farm, a small family farm that sells fresh veggies. They are what we say out here, “salt of the earth” people.

I asked Catherine to write a bit about her and their story. This is what America looks like behind the grocery store. I will add I have been buying ¼ cows from them for 2 years and the taste is different. It’s better and I know they have cared for their herd and raised them thoughtfully.

“We are Newbold Farms!

We are Jake and Catherine Newbold, and along with our daughter Evie and our Australian Shephard Murphy, we raise pasture-grazed registered Herefords. Jake and I have been together since we were 16 years old and ironically met on a farm! I am from Raleigh and Jake is from Bunn, NC. We have grown up together and  started this farm with a love and passion for animals and agriculture.”

“It all started with a Craigslist ad… we aren’t kidding. Jake went to NC State University and majored in Agriculture business management, and I went to East Carolina University for Nursing. We always dreamt that one day after college we would start a farm, but unfortunately didn’t have the key piece to starting… land, that’s where the Craigslist ad came to play. Jake put up an ad looking for a pasture to lease, that led to a job on a farm where we were able to start buying Herefords and the rest is history!”

“We love the Hereford breed, they are docile, easy going and amazing mamas, and we may be biased but we love the look of a red cow and nice green grass! In the beginning we weren’t sure where we wanted our farm to take us, and we decided what better way than to raise our animals to provide quality beef to local people. We slowly but surely began buying more Herefords to grow our herd and with the help of a new farm lease we were able to begin our freezer beef business in 2020, offering ¼. ½, and whole cows.”

“We currently have two farms we use to raise our cattle because we strip feed. We live on the small farm that houses all of our steers and weaned calves. We were lucky to find and work with the Triangle Land Conservancy and were able to become their first ever farmers on one of their new properties a few years ago.”

“We use as many regenerative agriculture practices as we can, meaning we try and let the animals help us help the land! We rotate cattle on different pastures to prevent overgrazing of grasses and to help naturally fertilize the ground, as well as planting diverse cover crops and different grasses to keep the ground nourished! Our animals are on grass year round, our steers in our beef program get grain from a local feed mill to help make our beef even better.”

“We love what we do and love doing it as a family and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for us and for agriculture in NC.”

Now this is living and loving local. Give them a call to get on their list. They sell out fast as they only offer one steer a month.
